Relaxed and Atmospheric Wedding Photography at Donington Park Farmhouse
If you want a wedding venue packed with history and character, Donington Park Farmhouse is an unbelievable choice. With its original 17th century brickwork, cobbled courtyards, and those famous Pig Sties, it offers something completely different for couples planning a relaxed Derbyshire wedding.
As a Midlands photographer who has shot over 500 weddings during the last 18 years, I absolutely love working here. My style is entirely natural and documentary. That means no bossing people around and no awkward poses. I just want you to have the best day ever while I capture the real moments.
Here is my guide to getting the most out of your Donington Park Farmhouse wedding photos.
The Ceremony: Embracing the Atmosphere
Let us be honest about the Threshing Barn and the Hitching Room. They are quite dark. But that is exactly why they are so special! You book this venue for its cozy, candlelit, and romantic vibe. It is not supposed to look like a bright white office space. Things have improved now with the addition of the windows but luckily it hasn’t completely changed the cosy vibe.
Some photographers panic when the lights go down, but I thrive in it. Having worked with the registrars here many times, I know exactly how to handle the ceremony lighting. My goal is to keep your photos looking natural and true to the mood of the room. I want your pictures to feel as warm and intimate as it felt on the day, all without killing the atmosphere with harsh flashes.
Portraits: Dappled Light and Sunset Views
One of the best things about this venue is the variety of locations we can use without having to walk miles. There is not just one set spot for photos.
During the day, I love taking couples for a quick walk down the driveway leading to the campsite. The trees there create this amazing dappled light as the sun shines through the leaves, making it a brilliant quiet spot for some daytime portraits.
Then, as the evening rolls in, I always keep an eye on the sky. If we are blessed with a golden hour, we will sneak out to the front field for just ten minutes. The sun dips over the church on the hill, giving us incredible light against the historic farm buildings. It is the perfect excuse for you both to step away from the crowds and just take everything in.
The Wedding Breakfast and the Evening Party
Your wedding breakfast inside the Pig Sties is always a massive talking point for guests. The lighting in there is low and cozy, making it a brilliant space for capturing natural, intimate shots during the speeches as everyone squeezes into the booths and the drinks start flowing.
My one practical tip for this room is to think about your seating plan. The booths are amazing but they can be a bit snug. If you have guests with reduced mobility, just make sure you place them where they can get in and out easily!
Then it is time for the Threshing Barn to do what it does best. Because there isn’t much natural daylight in that room, it transforms into a proper party venue the minute the band or DJ hits play. It does not matter if it is early evening in the middle of summer or in the depth of winter; the nightclub vibe starts instantly.
The courtyard outside becomes the perfect chill out zone. I love how a Donington Park Farmhouse wedding naturally splits between the absolute chaos of the dancefloor inside and the relaxed, chatty atmosphere under the stars and festoon lights outside. I spend the evening bouncing between the two to make sure both sides of the story are documented.
You will not catch me packing up my camera gear right after your first dance. I stay to capture the real energy of the night. That means getting right into the middle of the crowd to photograph the wild dance moves, the spilled drinks, and the absolute best moments of your friends celebrating with you.
Your Wedding Day Safety Net
After shooting over 500 weddings, I know that great photos only happen when you are completely relaxed. That is why I act as an extra groomsman or bridesmaid on the day.
I carry a bag full of safety pins, crochet hook for tricky dress buttons, plasters, superglue etc. You never know what could happen. I have sewn split trousers back together, fixed buttonholes, driven the bridal party to the church when transport has let them down, I have even fixed the cake topper when it got broke in the post!
I handle the little stresses so you do not have to panic. You just focus on being yourselves, and I will capture the magic.

“I can’t recommend him enough, and the photos aren’t too bad either!
Chris was absolutely fabulous on our wedding day. He was always there to lend a helping hand, frequently finding a way for me to carry my dress so I didn’t get blown away. He always knows where to find the right light, and ways to make you give a big, natural smile!
I can’t recommend him enough, and the photos aren’t too bad either! You’d be making a mistake looking into booking Chris and going elsewhere, if you look at his page, you have to book!”
